Quick answer: for most Canadian drivers coating their own car, the choice comes down to three things: how much time you can spend on prep, whether you have a warm indoor space (all Magic Shield coatings need a 15°C–24°C surface), and how often you want to reapply. A spray coating is the easiest and fastest; a bottle coating kit takes a full day with proper prep but forms a thicker, longer-lasting layer; a premium coating is for owners who want the most gloss and are happy to follow a stricter cure. Whatever you choose, the prep (wash, decontaminate, strip oils) matters as much as the coating.
The three types of DIY coating
| Type | Best for | Application | Magic Shield option (CAD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graphene ceramic spray | First-timers, quick top-ups, coating wheels, glass and trim as well as paint | Spray on, wipe off, panel by panel; keep dry 4 hours indoors | Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating, $39.99 |
| Bottle coating kit | Owners who can set aside a day for full prep and want a thicker layer than a spray | Apply with an applicator in a cross-hatch, level, inspect; keep indoors 8+ hours | Graphene Ceramic Coating (50 mL), $129.99 Ceramic Coating PRO 10H, from $78.99 for one kit |
| Premium coating | Owners who want maximum gloss and will follow a longer cure | Apply in a garage, inspect within 15 minutes; avoid water 7 days in winter | Diamond AI Coating, $189.99 |

Five questions to ask before you buy
1. Do you have a warm, covered space?
All of our coatings need a surface temperature of 15°C to 24°C, out of direct sun. If you can only work outdoors, plan the job for late spring to early autumn. Our winter application guide explains how to coat safely in a heated garage.
2. How much time can you give the prep?
A coating bonds only to clean, bare clear coat. Budget time to wash, use an iron remover, clay the paint and wipe it down with a prep spray before you open the coating. If the paint has swirls or light scratches, polish first: the coating will lock in whatever is underneath. Our preparation kits put these steps together.
3. What are you coating?
Bottle kits are made for paint. The spray can also be used on glass, wheels and trim. For leather seats there is a separate Leather Graphene Ceramic Coating.
4. How often do you want to reapply?
A spray coating is quick to reapply whenever water stops beading. A bottle coating takes longer to apply but is meant to last longer between applications. Many owners use both: a bottle coating as the base layer and the spray as a top-up.
5. How big is the vehicle?
Check the coverage on the product page before you buy, and order a second bottle or a bundle for large SUVs and trucks or if you plan a second layer.
What a complete DIY coating job needs
- Wash: Graphene Shampoo (pH-neutral)
- Decontaminate: Iron Remover and Clay Bar Kit
- Strip oils: Prep Spray
- Correct (if needed): One-Step Polish
- Protect: one coating from our ceramic coating kits
- Maintain: Graphene Shampoo for washes and Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating for top-ups
Common mistakes to avoid
- Coating a car that still has wax, polish oils or salt film on it. Always finish prep with a panel wipe.
- Working in direct sun or on a hot or freezing panel.
- Applying too much product, which leaves high spots that are hard to remove once cured.
- Washing or driving in rain before the cure time on the label has passed.
- Using strong alkaline cleaners on the coated paint afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Is a DIY ceramic coating worth it in Canada?
For most owners, yes: a coating makes road salt, slush and grime easier to wash off and keeps the paint looking glossy between washes. It does not replace regular washing in winter, and it will not hide scratches that are already in the paint.
Can I put a spray coating on top of a bottle coating?
Yes. Using the Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating as a top-up on a coated car is a common way to keep the finish slick between full applications.
Spray or kit: which is better for a first-timer?
The spray is the most forgiving: it goes on panel by panel and wipes off easily. If you are comfortable with a full day of prep and have a warm garage, a bottle kit is the next step.
